The Skills Training and Enrichment Program at Holyoke Community College hires and trains a cohort of highly qualified high school and college students as Peer Tutors. All high school tutors are graduates of STEP or Upward Bound participants. who are currently attending Holyoke High School or Dean Technical Vocational High School. All college tutors have experience working with STEP or other after-school programs and are currently attending Holyoke Community College. - Graduate of STEP - Maintains a minimum 2.5 G.P.A. in school subjects - Has excellent written and oral communication skills - Demonstrates leadership ability - Enjoys working with middle school students in one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions College Tutor Qualifications

Tutors apply to work with STEP in August and September. The process includes completing an application, collecting recommendations, and interviewing with STEP staff. Generally, tutor selection announcements are made by mid-September. Tutor Training
Tutors participate in a mandatory twelve-hour orientation training in September and in monthly follow-up trainings. Training topics include active listening skills, conflict resolution, tutoring strategies, leadership development, and youth-adult collaboration
