About STEP
STEP is an academic support program for students from the seventh and eighth grades in Holyoke. STEP assists youth in obtaining skills and motivation to complete middle school and high school and to enroll in college. The program incorporates interactive and hands-on learning experiences with in-school activities, classes, and field trips.

Program Activities

• After-school academic tutoring is held at Donahue, Peck and Sullivan Schools. Tutoring generally takes place Monday through Thursday from 3-6. STEP tutors are highly qualified high school and students who are graduates of STEP and qualified college tutors.

• Two sessions of five-week mini-courses are offered on
Saturdays at the Holyoke Community College campus. Mini-courses focus on traditional subjects such as language, math, and science, as well as on non-traditional subjects such as video, theater, photography, pottery, yoga, karate, hip-hop and many others.

• Peer leadership workshops are given on topics such as teamwork, self esteem, study skills, goal-setting, communication skills, diversity, and college planning. Guest speakers and field trips to possible places of employment are offered to provide students with information about the education and skills necessary for various career choices.

• A three-week summer academic enrichment program offered at the Holyoke Community College.  Summer courses we have offered in the past: Getting to know your environment, Hiking, Mask Making, Nutrition, Business, Hip-Hop, Theater, and many others.

• Several educational field trips are offered throughout the year. Destinations include Boston Museum of Science, New York City, ropes course, UMASS Amherst, New Hampshire, and Mystic Aquarium.

STEP is sponsored by Holyoke Community College. STEP is generously funded by the Frank Peter Trust Memorial, the Massachussetts Educational Opportunities Program, DOE 21st Century CLC, Community Foundation, Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative, and The Holyoke Public Schools Connections Program.
